The Center for Resilient Metro-Regions was honored with the opportunity to serve on a multi-disciplinary team sponsored by the AIA Architects Foundation's Communities by Design to advise the Austin neighborhoods of Hancock, Cherrywood, Wilshire Wood, and Delwood, already divided by Interstate 35, on how they can thrive and improve at a human-scale even given a massive disruptive widening of the interstate.
The community and city are exploring the opportunity for capping the interstate, but such investments would be without state and federal funds and for redeveloping suburban style shopping plazas into a town center.
The slides presented to the neighborhood on 03/28/25 are below. The full report will be issued soon.
The Communities by Design team was:
Joel Mills, Director Communities by Design
Erin Simmons, Director of Design Assistance, Communities by Design
Wayne Feiden, FAICP, Director of Center for Resilient Metro-Regions and project team leader
Mike Davis, FAIA, LEED AP
Eric Halvorsen, AICP, Principal, RKG Associates
Seleta Reynolds, Chief Innovation Officer, Office of Strategic Innovation, Los Angeles
Cindy Zerger PLA, ASLA, Urban Design Practice Lead, Toole Design
